Caravans evacuated after landslip causes hundreds of them to hurtle down hill

Hundreds of people were evacuated from a holiday park after a landslide sent several caravans crashing down a hill.

Thunder storms and torrential rain caused the mobile homes to slide down a hill, sparking a huge emergency service presence.

The landslide happened at Pettycur Bay in Fife, Scotland last night.

Shocking snaps showed caravans had crashed into one another as they slipped down the slope of the holiday park, Daily Star reports.

Glen McGill was one of the hundreds who was evacuated from his holiday home during the incident.

He said: “We had hours and hours of the most horrendous lighting and heavy rain from at least 8pm to 3am.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. No gaps between lighting– more like constant flickering like an electrical outage.”

The landslide even blocked part of the nearby railway and even shut the A921 between Kinghorn and Burntisland.

Officers urged drivers to avoid the area as emergency services worked to reopen the road.

Captioning photos that were uploaded in the early hours of the morning, Glen said: “We’ve just been evacuated from our caravan due to danger of landslip.

“One along from us is already slipping. No sleep tonight as road out blocked both ways.”

He then added: “All caravans now being evacuated at Pettycur.

“Main road blocked to either side with landslips though Burntisland side might be passable for emergency vehicles.

Witness Glen McGill said the horror landslide was like nothing 'he had ever seen' (@BRAWSCOTLAND1 / Twitter)

“A lot of mud and a few vans where they shouldn’t be. Just hope the ground isn’t any more unstable.”

Thankfully, it is understood that no one was injured in the landslide.

All the holidaygoers were instead moved from their homes and were housed in the main Bay Hotel for the night.
