Caravans destroyed in Newport as fire sends plumes of smoke above city

Plumes of thick, black smoke could be seen across Newport after two caravans went up in flames.

Fire crews were called to the Somerton area of the city just before 9am on Monday.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they received reports of two empty caravans on fire.

Crews from the Maindee station were sent to the scene to put out the fire.

The caravans were parked near Laburnum Drive and have been reduced to rubble.

Here are some pictures from the scene:

One eye-witness, who did not want to be named, said the smoke could be seen from miles away.

He said: "I walked out after hearing the sound of sirens in the distance. After I walked out I saw a large plume of dark smoke.

"And over the tops of the houses in the distance I could see flames appearing from between the trees. The trees continuously threw black smoke."
