Caravan fire off the M32: Two people 'flee' after blaze destroys vehicle

Two people "fled" a caravan after it caught fire off the M32, police believe.

A witness took pictures at around 3.30pm today (February 23) showing a large emergency service presence on New Gatton Road, St Werburghs.

Two fire engines, two police cars and an ambulance were on the scene after a caravan was completely destroyed by the flames, only a blackened shell remaining.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said: "The two occupants of the caravan - a man and woman - are believed to have had a disagreement.

"They fled from the caravan. We are looking for them as we believe they may have been affected by smoke inhalation.

"There was concern about the fire because of gas cylinders in the caravan."

The spokesman added that no one was hurt in the fire, which was extinguished before 3.30pm.

New Gatton Road is home to a community of around seven caravans.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "A firefighter mentioned to me there two canisters inside.

"He told me, 'If you see a fireman standing clear of a hose, stay away.'

"They were concerned it could blow.

"The flames were out but the firefighters were still dampening it down with a hose when I left at 4pm.

"The space behind the caravan is burnt. It's usually chock-a-block down there but that space is empty now, so it looks like someone has moved the vehicle which was behind it."

The graffiti on the fence running along New Gatton Road previously read "System Change Now", but a burn on the fence has obscured the lettering.

The New Gatton Road caravan community is at the centre of a long-running row involving businesses in the area, we reported earlier this month.

Business owners have complained the caravans are illegally parked, alleging drug use and antisocial behaviour have plagued the road since the vehicles have been there.
