Carabao Cup semi-final rule change involving extra time that affects Newcastle United

Newcastle United must play extra time at St James’ Park if their semi-final tie with Southampton is level after 180 minutes. The uniqueness of the Carabao Cup means the penultimate stage is the only round contested over two legs.

Every other tie is a one-off game, with the final played at Wembley Stadium. Every round leading up to the semi-final also goes straight to penalties if the two sides are level at full-time.

However, extra time becomes active from this point onwards, meaning Newcastle could play an additional 30 minutes in front of their home supporters - providing the aggregate scoreline is level. There is no away-goal rule in the Carabao Cup, a move UEFA have also adopted in European competitions since 2021.

Eddie Howe will be hoping his side can get the job done without the need for extra time and penalties. As usual, spot-kicks will decide the tie should the scoreline remain level after 120 minutes.

The Carabao Cup rules state: “In the event of the scores being level at the end of ninety minutes’ play in rounds one, two, three, four and five, no extra time shall be played. The winners shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with procedures as approved by IFAB.

“If the aggregate score is level at the end of ninety minutes in either: the second leg of the semi-final; or in the final tie, an extra half hour shall be played and, if the aggregate score is still level at the end of extra time, the winner of that competition match shall be determined by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark in accordance with procedures as approved by IFAB.”
