Carabao Cup second round draw details as Premier League clubs enter competition

The Carabao Cup got underway on Tuesday night and it was a nightmare night for Championship teams.

There were shocks aplenty with no fewer than 11 second tier sides being dumped out - and nine of those by lower league opposition. Only Norwich and Preston secured a safe passage, albeit after beating fellow Championship sides.

Among the biggest scalps was Hull City losing 2-1 away at Yorkshire rivals Bradford City. The Tigers took the lead but Mark Hughes' side came from behind to clinch a spot in the second round. Other second tier teams to be eliminated by League Two sides include Blackpool, Luton and Reading. The Tangerines were beaten by Barrow on penalties whilst the latter two lost in normal time to Newport and Stevenage respectively.

Other Championship teams to fall at the first hurdle were Wigan, who lost 1-0 to Fleetwood, and Cardiff who were humbled 3-0 at home by Portsmouth.

QPR, Stoke and Swansea all went out on penalties away at League One opposition, with Charlton dumping out Rangers, Oxford getting the better of Russell Martin's men on spot-kicks and the Potters beaten by Morecambe.

Other stand-out results saw Exeter demolish fellow League One side Cheltenham 7-0 whilst Bolton swatted aside Salford in a 5-1 win. Last week Millwall became the first scalp of this season's competition, when Cambridge dumped them out.

The draw for the next stage of the competition takes place on Wednesday night. It will be conducted following the conclusion of the tie between Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, which will be screened live on Sky Sports. That clash is one of seven outstanding first round ties. The second round will remain regionalised.

The 35 first round winners will be in the draw along with 15 other sides. This comprises of Championship duo Watford and Burnley along with the 13 top flight sides who do not have European football on their schedule this season. That list includes the likes of Leicester, Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Everton.

Liverpool, the current holders, will enter the competition in the third round stage along with six other top flight teams involved in European action.
