Carabao Cup quarter-final: When is it and who could Sunderland face?

Sunderland are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout win over Queens Park Rangers.

The Black Cats will learn their fate for this year’s fifth round on Saturday, October 30, live on SoccerAM.

The draw has also been shown live for FREE on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel in previous rounds, and is expected to be the same this weekend.

The quarter-final ties will be played on the week commencing December 20.

Sunderland could face Premier League opposition in the last 8, with Arsenal and Chelsea already in the hat after wins over Leeds and Southampton.

Lee Johnson's side have been impressive in cup competitions this year and are unbeaten in them this season.

However, with success comes further midweek fixtures.

The Black Cats know all too well how much a fixture pile-up affected their end of season combustion last year and will be keen to avoid that.

So far, has been able to rotate his squad, using cup competitions to give Sunderland's second string vital minutes while also giving youngsters a chance to impress.

Tonight's game at Loftus Road is the sixth midweek fixture out of eight back to back weeks.

Johnson faces a difficult task balancing his squad's need for minutes while also managing fitness to avoid further injuries.
