Carabao Cup live: Man United stunned in penalty shootout before Arsenal and Liverpool discover third-round opponents in draw

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup after a stunning shootout defeat to League Two Grimsby in the second round on another disastrous night for Ruben Amorim.

The Premier League side suffered a shock exit at Blundell Park having been forced to battle back from 2-0 down to even force their hosts to penalties. After progressing through the entire XIs of both sides, Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar with his second spot-kick, sending the Grimsby fans into ecstasy as they invaded the pitch with their side through to the third round - and leaving more tough questions for Amorim with Manchester United yet to win this season.

They join the Premier League’s European representatives, who entered the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage, with the draw made for the competition. Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and last season’s winners Newcastle are among who found out their first opponents of the campaign, with Southampton set for a tough trip to the Premier League champions and Port Vale hosting Mikel Arteta’s men. A London derby between Crystal Palace and Millwall could be a tasty tie.

Grimsby handed Sheffield Wednesday trip after Man United upset as Carabao Cup third round fixtures revealed

23:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Grimsby Town's reward for toppling Manchester United in the Carabao Cup is a third-round trip to crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.

The League Two Mariners pulled off one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history by beating the Premier League giants following a mammoth penalty shootout and will now travel to Hillsborough with a realistic shot of making the fourth round.

Liverpool will host Southampton and there is also a home tie for defending champions Newcastle as they welcome League One Bradford.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City will all also face third-tier opposition.

Man United hit new low against Grimsby to raise unthinkable Ruben Amorim question

An emotional Ruben Amorim speaks to Sky Sports after Manchester United's shock cup exit

23:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“In the end, it doesn’t matter if you recover or not. I know that the best team won. The only team that was on the pitch. The best players lost. Any team can win against group of players. I think that the team and the players spoke really loud today. That’s it. We lost, the best team won.

“I think it is really clear what [the players] spoke. Let’s move on from this day. I think it was really clear today what happened.

“It’s not just the space, but the way we started the game without any intensity. All of the ideas about the pressure, we were completely lost. It is hard to explain. I think that is a problem - when you lose but see something new, it is different. When you see something like today, it’s hard to talk about that. I just want to say I am really sorry for the fans. Today, I have nothing to say. I am sorry.

“I think the players gave the response on the pitch today. I don’t need to talk about that. We have a game on the weekend and then we have two weeks, and we will sort things out.

“When you play against a fourth division team, it is not the goalkeeper. It is everything. It is. the environment, it is the way you face the competition. Everyone is going to pay attention to everything., every detail. We showed that performance today, so my players spoke really loud.”

“It’s not sunk in yet,” Pym tells Sky Sports. “I’m a Manchester United fan, so I’m half fuming a bit! Nights like this are what you play football for. It’s beautiful.

“I should have done a little bit better. I spent a good hour yesterday going through penalties, just in case. One save kept us in it, and the boys did brilliant.”

Grimsby stun Manchester United in dramatic shootout

On to the Blundell Park pitch the fans pour, a sea of bodies in the grips of ecstasy. What drama at the end, that shootout 18 minutes in all, but how the Grimsby players deserved that. They were outstanding tonight, outplaying their illustrious opponents for long periods - into the third-round hat they go on a famous night by the Lincolnshire seaside.

To penalties

21:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Wow. How Grimsby might rue the disallowed goal at 2-0, Cameron Gardner perhaps incorrectly flagged for offside after Harry Maguire’s intervention - in the end, it’s the centre-half’s involvement at the other end that has proved key.

Remember, we’re straight to penalties - no extra time. Everton have beaten Mansfield, meanwhile - they join Fulham and Brighton in progressing to the third round tonight.

GOAL! Grimsby 2-2 MANCHESTER UNITED (Harry Maguire, 89 minutes)

21:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

From the depths of despair, Manchester United are level! How often does Harry Maguire manage to do this? A back-post header from the towering centre-back squares affairs at Blundell Park.

Heartbreak for Grimsby - but the game isn’t over yet.

What bravery from Christy Pym! A corner is not fully cleared and a goalmouth scramble ensues, with the goalkeeper struck square in the kisser by Harry Maguire’s volley - yet back to his feet moments later to smother a developing fire of danger.

Grimsby 2-1 Manchester United, 84 minutes

21:42 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Nearly the most unfortunate of moments for Cameron McJannet, the stall of the ball on the soggy surface catching him out as the defender nutmegs himself - but a slow Benjamin Sesko is unable to capitalise and lets the Grimsby centre-half get a foot back in.

Grimsby have had their chances to extend their lead, but it is now a narrow one. David Artell issues some forceful instructions to his side; Ruben Amorim also takes a moment to deliver some messages to his team.

GOAL! Grimsby 2-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (Bryan Mbeumo, 75 minutes)

21:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Life for Manchester United! Bryan Mbeumo drives at the Grimsby defence, angling inwards slightly on his left foot, and then produces a delicious curling effort that bends by Christy Pym and into the corner.

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 74 minutes

21:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A double change from Grimsby with Cameron Gardner and George McEachran taken off. Enter Jaze Kabia, an eye-catching summer signing from Truro City, and Clarke Oduor - who arrived on loan from Bradford yesterday. Quite the occasion in which to make one’s debut for a new club.

Offside! Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 72 minutes

21:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Grimsby think they have a third - but the flag is up! Cameron Gardner finishes with aplomb thanks to a friendly kiss off the inside of the post, but the young Scot is deemed offside despite Harry Maguire’s touch on the pass forward. That looked a deliberate action from Maguire, and the pass was not aimed for Gardner - should it have stood?

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 68 minutes

Mason Mount has been sent into the storm. Ayden Heaven is replaced. Diogo Dalot looks to have gone into the back three with Mount taking up a left-wing-back position - though like much of the Blundell Park surface, you’d imagine it’ll be fluid.

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 63 minutes

21:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Grimsby are defending so well. Jayden Sweeney makes an excellent block and George McEachran is then in sharply to prevent a shooting opportunity on the edge of the box.

That’s a top stop, too - Christy Pym, low to his left in haste to keep out a Bruno Fernandes skudder.

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 60 minutes

21:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Grimsby manager David Artell is soaked through. This isn’t necessarily his first choice side, either - there’s plenty of attacking talent on the bench, including the experienced Danny Rose. The striker won’t be required, as things stand.

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 57 minutes

21:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A great chance for Ayden Heaven! The young defender, somehow, manages to craft a header over the crossbar having connected low after stumbling on to a crossed free kick about 10 yards from goal.

Great pools of water are forming pitchside. This is great fun to watch - though rather less so for those out there, I’d imagine...

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 54 minutes

It’s properly pelting it down now, great cascades of water tumbling down from portentous skies. The Grimsby fans don’t seem to care.

It should be three! Grimsby cut Manchester United to ribbons and Darragh Burns looks set to slot home, only for a diving Ayden Heaven to make a miraculous block with his chest with Andre Onana beaten. Manchester United cling on.

Grimsby 2-0 Manchester United, 46 minutes

A great thunderclap and flash of lightning overhead rather exemplify the storm brewing for Manchester United. Bryan Mbeumo has gone up alongside Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, with Amad Diallo dropping deeper into a wing back role.

Carabao Cup third round draw

21:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A reminder that tonight sees the introduction of the nine Premier League clubs in European competition to the Carabao Cup - will Manchester United be joining many of the sides they would claim to rival in the third-round draw?

Bruno Fernandes is coming on at half time, Matthijs de Ligt and Bryan Mbeumo, too. Ruben Amorim knows he needs a spark.

Elsewhere...

20:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Crikey. A major shock brewing at Blundell Park - and Mansfield remain very much in the mix at Everton’s new Hill-Dickinson Stadium, where kick off was delayed slightly. 0-0 at half time there.

The games between Fulham and Bristol City and Oxford and Brighton are back underway after the half-time interval, with the two Premier League sides sitting pretty at 2-0 up.
