Carabao Cup extra-time and penalty shootout rules explained as West Ham and Crystal Palace play

The Carabao Cup second round is upon us and with that we will see a number of Premier League clubs join the competition.

Clubs in the EFL competed for a spot in the next round as they battled away in the first round of the tournament, but now things get a little bit more serious.

Excluding the Premier League giants who are competing in European competition, the rest enter the fray as they look to mount a cup run, and even plan their routes to the first domestic trophy of the season.

However with demands at the highest level tougher than ever, there's the potential that clubs will look to rotate their squads.

The competition is looking to increase the level of quality in the competition, and have therefore made a key change to the way the tournament will run this term by scrapping extra-time.

This means that if the scores are level after 90 minutes in any Carabao Cup tie this term, the clash with go straight to penalties.

The only exception in the Carabao Cup final which will include extra-time if necessary.

This is to reduce "additional fatigue issues" following a vote by English Football League clubs.

Another change has seen the removal of the ABBA penalty system. This means that a penalty shoot-out will revert to the traditional ABAB system.
