Carabao Cup draw live: Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle and Palace learn quarter-final opponents

Premier League leaders Arsenal will play Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after Oliver Glasner’s side knocked out Liverpool in the fourth round.

Palace thumped the league champions 3-0 as Arne Slot’s heavily rotated side found themselves outplayed at Anfield, in what was Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven games.

League One Cardiff City, the only side left in the competition from outside the Premier League, will host Chelsea, Manchester City will entertain Brentford, while Newcastle United will take on Fulham at St James’ Park.

The quarter-final fixtures are set to take place during the week commencing Monday 15 December with most matches kicking off on the evening of Tuesday 16 December or Wednesday 17 December.

Arne Slot stands by team selection

09:35 , Luke Baker

So, another disappointing night for Liverpool but Arne Slot stood by his team selection after the game.

The Reds boss made 10 changes and left star players out of the squad, leading to a sixth defeat in seven matches as Palace won 3-0 but does not regret his choice to prioritise the upcoming run of fixtures.

“It’s always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” explained Slot. “But it’s the same selection I did tonight as I did last season in rounds like this.

“There are many reasons maybe why we’ve lost six out of seven. None of them are good enough to accept losing so many.

“I can come up with arguments or reasons but none of them will be enough to go to that standard because at Liverpool losing five out of six, six out of seven is always too much.

“In two days we play Villa. The last time I played a player that we thought was ready for that programme, it turned out maybe that he wasn’t. It was Alexander Isak when he went out with an injury.”

Arteta: 'Nwaneri took his chance'

07:54 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mikel Arteta was pleased to see Ethan Nwaneri on the scoresheet: "Really good and he came on the other day as well and he's going to have those chances and when he has, he needs to make the most out of it. I think he took the goal really well."

Frank blames referee for boot incident

07:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

Tottenham fell behind at Newcastle with 24 minutes gone when Fabian Schar met Sandro Tonali's corner – which was delayed by Djed Spence tying his bootlaces – with a firm downward header, prompting ultimately futile protests from the visitors that the defender had not been allowed to get back into position.

"Always disappointing to lose, always disappointing to go out of the tournament that we would love to progress in,” the Spurs manager said.

"Small margins decided the game tonight - it was a very even game with chances and situations in both boxes. The two goals were also small margins where there was two mistakes.

"One [mistake] unfortunately from [referee] Chris Kavanagh, in terms of things you need to give. Djed Spence had his boot off - he needs time to tie his boot and he didn't. His marker, Schar, scored. I have spoken to Chris about it, and we will keep that between Chris and I."

Maresca fumes with Delap over red card

06:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca accused Liam Delap of being selfish after receiving a "stupid" and "embarrassing" red card in the Carabao Cup victory over Wolves.

Delap was dismissed in the 4-3 success at Molineux after picking up two yellow cards in seven minutes after coming on as a substitute for his first appearance since August.

The first booking was for wrestling Yerson Mosquera to the ground and his second came after a reckless aerial challenge with Emmanuel Agbadou.

It was Chelsea's sixth red card in nine games this season and the Italian was unhappy with his striker, who will now miss the weekend clash with Tottenham.

"For today we have a very a stupid red card, that was completely unnecessary, absolute it was a stupid foul, we can avoid that," Maresca said.

"I completely support and understand the red card like against Brighton and Manchester United that is difficult, but the red card against Nottingham and a red card today we can avoid that and we have to avoid that.

"It's embarrassing when it is a red card like today. It's embarrassing, two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both I think we can avoid.

"After the first yellow card I told him to four or five times 'keep calm', but he's a player when he is inside the pitch, probably he is playing the game for himself and he struggled to realise and to listen around him."

Arsenal keep another clean sheet

05:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

Arsenal’s defence has been breached just three times in 14 matches across all competitions so far.

Arteta said: "We were struggling in the first half. I expected that when you make 10 changes and you have players that have never played before and some of them haven't played much this season.

"You have to gamble. But I was ready to take that risk and in the second half, we needed to start in a different way and we certainly did that and the game shifted momentum."

Arteta hails debutant Dowman

04:04 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mikel Arteta lauded Max Dowman's "special" performance as the 15-year-old rewrote history by becoming Arsenal's youngest-ever starter in his side's Carabao Cup victory against Brighton.

Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka - who replaced Dowman with 20 minutes remaining - struck in the second half as Arsenal secured a 2-0 win at the Emirates to book their place in the fifth round and a home tie against Crystal Palace.

But it was Dowman, still two months and two days shy of his 16th birthday, who stole the show and was afforded a standing ovation as he departed the pitch.

"A tiny smile, that's what you get with him," said Arteta when asked how Dowman reacted when he told him he was starting.

"For him everything is natural, for him everything is OK. It's the way he plays and that's the secret, that he doesn't make a big fuss of it.

"He just does what he does best, which is to play football. To play football with a lot of courage and determination and today again, he has shown some incredible skill, some capacity to run past players at that level in the Premier League at 15. It's definitely something special."

City come through close encounter

02:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

Manchester City overcame a Carabao Cup scare to book their quarter-final place with a 3-1 win at Swansea.

Goncalo Franco had fired the Championship outfit ahead with the game's first goal attempt after 12 minutes but City equalised before half-time as Jeremy Doku's effort took a wicked deflection.

Swansea had to soak up intense pressure but, without the absent Erling Haaland, City largely fired blanks until Omar Marmoush blasted them ahead after 77 minutes.

Rayan Cherki confirmed victory in stoppage time by rolling the ball inside Andy Fisher's far post, finally ending Swansea hopes of repeating their third-round victory over Nottingham Forest.

Carabao Cup draw

Wednesday 29 October 2025 23:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

Cardiff have been handed a dream home Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea.

The League One club are the lowest ranked team left in the competition, having won 2-1 at Welsh rivals Wrexham on Tuesday night.

Chelsea came through 4-3 against Wolves at Molinuex, holding off a second-half fightback from the home side to secure their place in the last eight.

Elsewhere in the draw, holders Newcastle will be at home to Fulham.

Eddie Howe's side saw off Tottenham 2-0 at St James' Park on Wednesday night, while Fulham had edged past League One Wycombe on penalties on Tuesday evening.

Crystal Palace - who beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield - will head to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The Gunners beat Brighton 2-0 on Wednesday night - and had battled to a 1-0 win over the Eagles on Sunday to keep themselves top of the table.

Manchester City, who came from behind to win 3-1 at Swansea, will be at home against Brentford.

The Bees coasted to a 5-0 victory at Grimsby on Tuesday night.

The quarter-final ties will take place in the week commencing December 15.

Arteta hails Arsenal's fourth-round win

Wednesday 29 October 2025 23:11 , Lawrence Ostlere

Mikel Arteta delighted by Arsenal’s win over Brighton (and yet another clean sheet):

“A very special evening to be fair, very happy for various reasons. Obviously, we are in the quarter-finals, and we won the game against a really tough opponent. We made 10 changes, we played players that never played together, yet we made two huge debuts for Max [Dowman] and Andre [Harriman-Annous]. That feeling of giving the opportunity to somebody and fulfilling a dream is unique, and I'm very happy that things turned out to be very positive, and we managed to win the game.”

Vitor Pereira: 'It is my fault'

Wednesday 29 October 2025 22:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

Vitor Pereira has spoken after Wolves’ rousing second-half comeback which almost overturned Chelsea’s three-goal lead at half-time:

"What a second half. In the first half, we conceded the first goal and when I looked at the team, they were a bit lost and we conceded the second and third goals. It's my responsibility. We changed 11 players today and we play with 11 players who have not been playing for a long time. The connection is not easy for this kind of game.

"We spoke at half-time and I told them it is my fault, but I want to see my team and the spirit. We won 3-1 in the second half. The goal we conceded was a pity. We had the chance to score more goals. I am very happy with the spirit we showed in the second half and with our supporters. We feel the energy to compete and to change the situation."

Newcastle manager Howe on Woltemade

Wednesday 29 October 2025 22:24 , Lawrence Ostlere

Nick Woltemade's sixth goal of the season sealed holders Newcastle's passage to a fourth-successive Carabao Cup quarter-final as Tottenham became their latest victims.

Woltemade's second-half header wrapped up a 2-0 win set in motion by Fabian Schar's 24th-minute opener to leave the home contingent among a crowd of 51,216 at St James' Park dreaming of a return to Wembley.

Here’s Eddie Howe on his German striker:

“He’s very open to new ideas, so he’s absorbed all the information we’ve given him. He’s been very good tactically and that’s enabled us to play the way we want to. Great to see him score again to give him confidence … We’re still figuring out the best way to use him but hopefully we’re on the right path.”

Last night: Will Fish fires Cardiff past old foes Wrexham and into Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Wednesday 29 October 2025 21:13 , Lawrence Ostlere

Will Fish's thumping volley secured League One side Cardiff a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as Wrexham were punished for their poor performance in Tuesday's all-Wales encounter.

The Red Dragons' dreams of reaching the last eight of the competition for the first time since 1978 went up in smoke as the ambitious Championship outfit fell to a disheartening defeat at a subdued SToK Cae Ras.

Wrexham substitute Kieffer Moore equalised against his former club, who had deservedly led through Yousef Salech, but Cardiff were not to be denied as Fish's fizzing finish earned a 2-1 victory in the sides' first meeting in 21 years.

Last night: Fulham survive shootout against League One Wycombe to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Wednesday 29 October 2025 21:04 , Lawrence Ostlere

Fulham survived a mighty scare to edge past Wycombe 5-4 on penalties to progress to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw at Adams Park.

Josh King scored his first goal in senior football to equalise for the Premier League side at the start of the second half after Cauley Woodrow netted in the fourth minute against his former club.

The League One side then held out as Marco Silva’s team put them under waves of pressure, surviving a heart-stopping moment deep in added time when Anders Hagelskjaer cleared Kevin’s strike off the line.

In the shoot-out that followed, Fulham twice missed the chance to win it as Ryan Sessegnon and Jonah Kusi-Asare were denied by goalkeeper Will Norris.

But the hosts could not take advantage and after Donnell McNeilly’s kick was saved, Issa Diop thumped in the winner.

Last night: Brentford emphatically end Grimsby’s Carabao Cup adventure with fourth-round thrashing

Wednesday 29 October 2025 20:55 , Lawrence Ostlere

Brentford cruised into the last eight of the Carabao Cup with a clinical 5-0 win at Blundell Park that ended Grimsby’s impressive run in the competition.

The Mariners famously beat Manchester United here in the second round and saw off Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in round three, but a raucous crowd was subdued by two goals in five first-half minutes as the Bees established a 3-0 lead at the interval.

Mathias Jensen opened the scoring from 20 yards, Keane Lewis-Potter headed home a second and Reiss Nelson effectively put the tie to bed before the break.

Fabio Carvalho added a fourth from the penalty spot and substitute Nathan Collins headed in a fifth.
