Carabao Cup boost for Arsenal as Liverpool face EFL investigation

Arsenal could be handed a major boost in their hopes of lifting the first piece of silverware of the season, as Liverpool face an investigation from the EFL over breaking rules during the game against Milton Keynes Dons.

The Athletic report that the Reds could face possibly being thrown out of the competition after reportedly fielding an ineligible player in the third round tie.

Arsenal were drawn against the Premier League leaders in the fourth round of the competition in one of the more mouthwatering ties, but the Gunners could avoid playing the Reds should the EFL deem the crime serious enough to warrant expelling them from the tournament.

"The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players," a Liverpool spokesman told the Athletic.

"We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete."

While the EFL simply said: "We are currently considering the matter."

Should Liverpool be found guilty, they face either a fine or being thrown out of the competition, although if previous situations are anything to go by, then a fine may be the most likely outcome.

Sunderland were given a fine back in 2014 after playing Ji Dong-Won without full international clearance.

Arsenal's game against Liverpool is currently scheduled to take place the week beginning October 28th.
