Cara Hunter urges public to look out for symptoms after brain tumour diagnosis

A Northern Ireland MLA has thanked the public for their well wishes after she shared her experience of being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

SDLP MLA for East Derry, Cara Hunter, has urged those with similar symptoms to speak with their GPs.

And while the tumour diagnosis is not life-threatening, the 25-year-old said it is "life altering".

She said: "Thanks so much to everyone for their lovely messages this evening. Also to my mum, partner, family and lovely GP for being so supportive over the last year or so. It’s been both an interesting and difficult journey navigating this diagnosis. While not life threatening, it has definitely been life-changing.

"If you have similar symptoms of headaches in the back of the head, sight changes, weight gain and are a woman who may have experienced missed cycles or swollen or painful breasts, you could have a pituitary tumour.

"Talk to your GP and ask could it be pituitary related? Ask your Heath professional for a ‘prolactin blood test."

Colum Eastwood took to Twitter to praise the young MLA for her bravery in speaking out.

The SDLP leader said: "Cara is part of the new generation of SDLP reps who've stepped up and proved that young people have a key role to play in politics. I know she won't let this hold her back."
