Pashley bikes are a cliche, Uber is over. There are only two acceptable forms of transport around London fashion week this season. Number one: walking everywhere in furry Gucci loafers. Number two: a really fancy car. Here are four reasons why a sweet ride is a fashion must-have right now:
1. A vintage car is the new go-to Insta backdrop
Both of NYFW’s most fabulous parties – the Marc Jacobs Gloss bash, and the Givenchy afterparty, which was held in a Delancey Street car park – were styled with eye-catching wrecks to pose against with the squad. (The wing mirrors were also handy for smudged-mascara checks.)
2. A grubby multistorey car park is the hottest address to be seen at right now
Last week, Anya Hindmarch staged a pre-fashion week bash on the third floor of Selfridges car park, selling furry dice, nodding dogs and bumper stickers (“My way or the highway”). Also: car wash attendants in vests. London fashion week’s base is also due to up sticks from the white stucco and fountains of Somerset House to the concrete floors and brash yellow signage of Soho’s Brewer Street car park.
3. Fashion sphinx Phoebe Philo loves a fancy cream leather and walnut car interior
A closeup inside a very swanky car is one of seven images (also: modern marble sculpture, her kids’ artworks, a derelict barn at her country house) Philo chooses in the Gentlewoman magazine to represent how she lives and works. 4. Bashed-up cars are a high-street must
Lara Stone’s H&M autumn/winter campaign was awash with flares, high waists and also featured a Ford Fairlane 66 parked in a driveway. So, yep, it’s already on the high street.
5. The Guardian fashion team will be travelling between shows this season in a Ferrari
Because that’s just how we roll.
