Car tyres deflated in Glasgow west end as protesters target SUVs over 'climate violation'

A number of cars in the west end of Glasgow have had their tyres deflated, each with a notice seemingly left behind by climate activists.

Air was let out of the tyres of at least four SUVs while bright green notices appeared under the windscreen wipers of all the vehicles stating that the cars constitute a 'climate violation'.

The vehicles are believed to have been targeted this morning or earlier this afternoon on Victoria Crescent and Prince Albert Road off Byres Road, on what is the penultimate day of COP26 in Glasgow.

No other types of cars on the street were targeted.

One local, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted Glasgow Live after spotting the bright green notices.

They said: "I was walking back from lunch this afternoon and saw the notices on the cars and saw some neighbours getting help with their tyres. One of the gents said that it obviously happened quite recently to a few cars along the street.

"The green notices were put under the windscreen wipers. It was all the SUVs on the road. All the other cars were just left alone. It was just them. They deflated either their front tyres or a few tyres of the cars."

The green notices read: "ATTENTION. CLIMATE VIOLATION. Your SUV contributes to the second biggest cause of carbon emissions rise in the last decade.

"This is why we have disarmed your car by deflating one of more of its tyres. If SUV drivers were a nation, in 2018 they would have ranked as the 7th biggest emitter of Co2.

'Unnecessary luxury lifestyle choices in rich countries are part of what is driving climate breakdown. This process is already having devastating impacts on people in poor countries...and we won't be spared either."

Police Scotland say they have been made aware.

A spokeswoman said: "We are aware of these incidents and there will be increased patrols in the area to provide reassurance to local residents."
