Car trapped under wheels of lorry in terrifying motorway crash

Photos from the scene of an horrific motorway crash have been released by officers who attended the incident.

The images highlight the carnage that unfolded in a terrifying accident during which a lorry slammed into a bridge on the M6.

One of several cars caught up in the smash came to a halt under the wheels of the HGV, which was left sprawled across the carriageway.

Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit, which released the images, said those injured were in a " serious but stable condition ".

Emergency services were called the M6, near Junction 27 - close to Parbold, near Ormskirk, at around midday.

The vehicles in the crash were travelling towards Merseyside, but the motorway was closed in both directions while police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

The northbound carriageway opened four hours later, but the southbound lanes remained closed while repairs were undertaken.

The crash was one of several that sparked 999 calls on a day in which the roads were hit by snow and ice.

The Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M53 was closed for much of Saturday after a car left the road near Clatterbridge, Wirral, at around 9.20am.

Meanwhile, a lorry smashed into a children's centre - closed due to the pandemic - in Aindsdale.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "One person was thought to have had head injuries and the other person neck and arm injuries.

"They were checked at the scene by paramedics. There are not thought to be any other injuries."
