Car trapped under wheels of lorry in motorway crash as police release terrifying images

Shocking pictures showing the aftermath of a horrific motorway crash have been released by police.

The images show a car under the wheels of a HGV which had crashed into a bridge.

The horrendous incident took place on the M6, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Police were called to the smash at around midday on Saturday.

Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit, which released the images, said those injured were in a "serious but stable condition".

Emergency services were called the M6, near Junction 27 - close to Parbold, near Ormskirk, at around midday.

The vehicles in the crash were travelling towards Merseyside, but the motorway was closed in both directions while police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

The northbound carriageway opened four hours later.

But the southbound lanes remained closed while repairs were undertaken.

The crash was one of several that sparked 999 calls on a day in which the roads were hit by snow and ice.

The Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M53 was  closed for much of Saturday  after a car left the road near Clatterbridge, Wirral, at around 9.20am.
