A driver who crashed a stolen car has avoided prison but has been disqualified for three years.
Reckless William Grenfell landed in a garden in Wishaw, missing the house by just three feet.
Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that he had been fleeing from the police after the owner reported the vehicle stolen.
Grenfell, 32, of Greenfield Crescent, Wishaw, admitted stealing a Ford Fiesta after breaking into a house in Goldcrest Court on April 26 last year.
He also admitted driving dangerously while disqualified and failing to give breath samples.
Jennifer Cunningham, prosecuting, said the male householder was awakened at 3.15am by a voice outside.
He heard the front door being opened then someone enter and take the car keys from a box in the hall.
The man watched helplessly as the Fiesta was driven away.
Police were soon on Grenfell's tail and he sped through a red light on Caledonian Road in the town centre as he then drove on to Kirk Road.
Grenfell, who was driving without headlights, lost control, crashed through a wall and landed in a garden.
He was detained and checked over in hospital before being returned to police custody.
The badly damaged Fiesta was declared a write off.
Defence agent Vincent McGovern said that only five days earlier Grenfell had been referred for mental health treatment, but this hadn't been followed up because of the lockdown.
The lawyer added: "He is now doing better and is working. He is in a relationship and has a son."
Grenfell was the subject of three driving bans at the time of the offences.
Sheriff Linda Nicolson ordered him to be supervised for two years and to carry out 200 hours of unpaid community work.
Grenfell will also be confined to his home each night for six months under an electronic tagging order.
He must resit his test if he wants to drive when his ban ends.
