Car thief failed to stop in high-speed chase even after cops burst his tyres

The driver of a stolen car being chased by the police refused to stop even when officers burst his tyres.

Brandon Watson's vehicle then mounted a grass verge and officers had to act quickly to avoid being hit.

Watson, 24, a prisoner, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted being in possession of a stolen car in Craigbank Street, Larkhall, on April 21.

Watson also admitted driving dangerously on various roads in Larkhall and Hamilton while disqualified and while under the influence of drink or drugs.

The court heard he drove at excess speed, failed repeatedly to stop for the police and crashed into a marked police vehicle.

Officers then used a device to deflate the stolen vehicle's front tyres, but Watson kept going regardless until mounting the pavement and a grass verge in Broomhill Road, Hamilton.

He was detained as he tried to reverse.

Watson, who has previous convictions, also admitted illegal possession of a screwdriver and committing the offences while the subject of three bail orders.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said his client has mental health problems, but had been doing well under a court supervision order until the latest offences.

Mr Bruce told the court: "He let himself down on this night by reverting to type."

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre called for a criminal justice social work report and an electronic tagging assessment.

Watson was again remanded in custody and will be sentenced next month.
