An 11-month-old baby boy has been found after the car he was in was stolen in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to reports the white 2013 Toyota RAV 4 was stolen in Keysborough about 2.10pm on Tuesday.

An extensive police search was launched with helicopters and several police units on the case.

The baby and the Toyota were found in Cranbourne about 5.40pm and a man was arrested.

Police say investigations are ongoing and a 46-year-old man is assisting them with their inquiries.

Investigators were told the boy's mother had just left the still-running Toyota on Putt Grove, when an unknown man entered the driver's seat and drove away with the baby still inside.
