Car smashes through pub beer garden narrowly missing drinkers

Shocking footage shows the moment a car ploughed through a pub beer garden narrowly missing three drinkers.

The incident, which was caught by CCTV cameras, took place at around 10.30pm on Monday, December 27 at the Hare and Hounds, on Ormskirk Road in Skelmersdale.

The stunned punters had been standing in the front beer garden when a car travelling at speed smashed through planters and benches, narrowly missing them, LancsLive reports.

Andrea Lesbirel, manager of the Hare and Hounds, said the fact no-one was hurt was a "miracle", although the car caused more than £2,000 worth of damage.

She said the beer garden is usually lined with picnic benches during the hotter months and filled with people all day and night.

Andrea, who has been the manager for three years, said: "It is a miracle there was no casualties, if this was in the summer there is no doubt there would have been.

"It's usually packed all day. I'm so glad no one got hurt, it would have been a very different story."

It is not thought that any of the people stood in the beer garden at the time of the crash were injured.

Andrea says that the vehicle had smashed through a metal bollard, two metal planters and three picnic benches before coming to a stop after hitting a further metal bollard.

If the second bollard was not there, she believes that the car would have gone on to cause even further damage to other vehicles parked on the side street.

The 28-year-old said: "There was £2,000 worth of damage because the picnic benches are around £200 to £300 each and the planters were bespoke so they were made for the pub and they were about £500 each. They were really big and obviously we've got to replace the bollards."

Fortunately, the incident hasn't effected the opening hours of the pub, with everything being cleared overnight allowing them to operate as normal the following day.

Andrea added: "It didn't effect opening hours, we were able to open next day. It was all cleared up in the morning. The local residents helped us to clear it up."

Lancashire Police attended the incident and are appealing to the public for information.

They are keen to identify the driver.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "We are appealing for information after a road traffic collision at the Hare and Hounds on Ormskirk Road in Skelmersdale.

"It occurred around 11pm on Monday (December 27).

"We are keen to identify the driver of the car."

Anyone with information can call 101 or email 872@lancashire.police.uk quoting log 1424 of December 27.
