Car smashes through metal railings in busy street

A main road was partially blocked and one person taken to hospital following a serious crash in Walkden.

The A6 (Manchester Road East) was closed around the junction with Pemberton Street from 1.10pm this afternoon.

It follows a crash involving a grey Nissan Qashqai which collided with metal railings close to the Shamrock Pub.

Police closed off part of the road around the scene of the collision and one person has since been taken to hospital, although the extent of their injuries is currently unknown.

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said they had received a call about the crash at 1.10pm.

They said: "We were called to reports of a collision on Manchester Road East.

"We sent two rapid response vehicles, two ambulances and a paramedic.

"We took one patient to hospital."

Traffic in the area is moving both ways but has been running very slowly as a result of the blockage.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact police on 101.
