Woman in critical condition after car smashes into tree injuring four

A pensioner is in a critical condition and three others have been injured after a car slammed into a tree on a busy road.

All the casualties were inside the vehicle, which was travelling along Aigburth Road in Aigburth, close to the junction with Mersey Road, when it hit the tree trunk on the central reservation.

The most seriously injured victim, a woman in her 70s, has been rushed to hospital.

Update: Sadly a person has now died following this accident.

Paramedics, police officers and fire fighters attended the scene after reports of a collision at 6.40pm.

A helicopter from the North West Air Ambulance Service also attended the scene, landing on the pitch at a nearby cricket club.

A tent had been erected near the scene of the crash, and it is expected the road will remain closed for some time.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "At 6.40pm, it was reported a car had been in collision with a tree on Aigburth Road.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the four occupants of the vehicle will be taken to hospital for assessment.

"The condition of one occupant, a woman in her 70s, is described as critical.

"Road closures are currently in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area."
