Car smashes into Levenshulme street filters

A car crashed into recently-installed street filters in south Manchester following a collision.

The incident took place on Randolph Street in Levenshulme where a series of street filters have been installed as part of a traffic calming project being undertaken by Manchester Council.

One resident, who did not wish to be identified, said they saw the collision happen at around 10.30pm on Monday evening (March 1).

It is believed the car was later towed away but shards of glass and debris from the vehicle were still visible at the scene this afternoon.

A spokesperson for Manchester City Council said: “Fortunately, no residents were injured as a result of this suspected collision, but we are aware that two planters in Randolph Street have been damaged.

"We would call on anyone who has information with regards to this incident to contact the Police as soon as possible and will support Greater Manchester Police if an investigation is opened in regard to this incident."

The Council confirmed that the debris would be cleared from the road and contractors have been notified to replace the damaged planters.

The filters are part of a six-month trial which aims to ease road traffic in the area.

They were installed at the start of January to controversy in the area, with residents split on supporting them.

Following initial feedback over the implementation of the filters, the council later installed additional safety measures including bolting the filters down to stands and reflective signage.

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for more information.
