Car smashes into fence and bus stop in late-night incident in Newport

A Newport resident has spoken of a close call for her disabled son after a car crashed into his fence.

Mandy Griffiths said her son David was at home on Nash Road last Thursday evening when a car crashed into the fence next to the house.

David, 35, suffers from a disability and lives with a support team. Mandy said he was asleep just after 11pm on Thursday when his team heard the commotion.

"He was fast asleep, but just after then they heard this almighty crash.

"They got up obviously to see what had happened and this car had just crashed right into the fence," she said.

Pictures taken at the scene show a white Ford Fiesta having collided heavily with the fence and bus stop sign on the footpath.

Mandy said she was thankful nothing more serious had happened, as her son often likes to watch cars going up and down the road.

"He's always up on the gate or the fence watching - everyone knows him at this stage. On another day he could've been out front and who knows what would've happened?" she said.

A spokesperson from Gwent Police said: "We had a call at about 11.10pm on Thursday, January 28 reporting a collision involving two cars. One car hit a fence and the other failed to stop.

"No-one was injured in the incident, and enquires are ongoing."
