Car smashes into Brewdog pub's front window after driver 'fell ill at the wheel'

A car has smashed through the glass front of a Brewdog pub after the driver fell at the wheel, police have said.

Emergency services including an ambulance and Fire and Rescue responded to the incident involving a red hatchback Nissan Leaf at 9.17am today.

The vehicle was pictured with its bonnet wide open after ploughing into the boozer in Micklegate, York, shattering the front window into pieces.

The scene has since been taped off with officers remaining at the scene after paramedics attended to check on the driver.

North Yorkshire police said in a statement: "This minor single-vehicle collision was reported by Yorkshire ambulance service at 9.17am who treated a man who had taken ill at the wheel before crashing into the Brewdog pub.

"North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue made the red hatchback car safe and City of York council is checking the building and made the area safe."

Brewdog York has closed and it is currently unknown when they will be able to reopen, Yorkshire Live reports.

North Yorkshire Police also tweeted: "All measures are being taken to keep the community safe and resolve the issue as quickly and efficiently as possible."

They added that York City Policing team, fire and ambulance service were also working together on the incident on Micklegate.

The Managing Director of Brewdog responded to concerned customers via social media, writing: "Everyone safe and well which is the main thing. We’ll be back open when it’s safe to do so."

Customers also expressed sympathies for the chain's inevitable loss of business as the incident comes on the first bank holiday weekend since pubs reopened for indoor service on May 17.

One member of the public commented: "Really feel for the staff at Brewdog York, a local business, first payday bank holiday Saturday since Covid with the sun out, and this happens...."

North Yorkshire Police have been approached for further comment.
