Car smashes into Black Lives Matter protesters as 'multiple people hit'

A major emergency response has been triggered after a car ploughed into people at a Black Lives Matter protest.

The group were standing at a Manhattan intersection in New York on Friday afternoon, police said.

The driver is in custody following the incident, which took place at around 4pm (9pm UK time).

Multiple ambulances have been seen rushing to the site at the corner of 39th Street and 3rd Avenue, NBC New York reports.

It was not immediately clear how many people were struck by the vehicle, with police only saying multiple pedestrians were hit.

It is not currently clear how severe the injuries they endured were.

On Twitter, the New York Police Department urged people to avoid the area in Midtown East, not far from the United Nations headquarters, "due to a vehicle collision involving multiple pedestrians".
