Car rescued after hanging over edge of Portrush Harbour

A car was moments away from plunging into the sea after it edged over the side of the harbour at Portush on Tuesday morning.

The incident, which happened around 9.30am, saw the car move forward from the council car parking bays while facing the sea.

Both front wheels of tipped over the pier perimeter, leaving the motor sitting on its metal frame with its bonnet above the waves.

A source said: "It must have been a pretty big shock to suddenly find your car heading towards the water in that way. The back brakes acted to secure the wee car but with the engine at the front, it could have tipped over."

A van was used to tow the white car back onto its four wheels and solid ground and no one was injured in the incident.

The Habour Master at Portrush said: "The car parking bays are council run but we have a responsibility to ask everyone who drives onto the pier to exercise extreme caution.

"We don't know the full details of how this car got into the situation but it was a lucky escape for the driver and the vehicle.

"The harbour surface is not slippery but caution should still be employed if driving or walking on it. We want to avoid anyone getting hurt for any reason."
