Pol Lt Col Sapas Prakanpitak, a Bang Phli police investigator, said the accident occurred at about 9.30pm on King Kaew road in tambon Bang Phli Yai.

Police and a rescue unit rushed to the scene. They found the front section of theToyota Vios stuck underneath the rear of the lorry with the driver trapped inside. Rescuers used a hydraulic jack to break open the car and brought out the driver, who was already dead. He was identified as Opas Penthale, 50.

Sawan Chonphut, 56, the lorry driver, said that while on the way back from Rayong he parked the vehicle on the roadside and went off to buy some food. Shortly afterwards, he heard a loud noise of the car hitting the rear of his lorry. He called the police.

Vorapan Tapianthong, 59, a witness who was driving in another car, told the police that the Toyota Vios was running fast in the left lane and rammed into the lorry's rear. The driver tried to swerve to the right to avoid hitting the lorry, but he was too slow, said the witness.

Police were screening footage from security cameras in the area to establish the cause of the accident.
