Car pulled out of Tyne as police investigate how Renault Clio ended up in the river

Police are investigating exactly how a car ended up plunging into the River Tyne.

Two teenagers escaped injury after a black Renault Clio was driven into the river near Blaydon shortly after 5pm on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the car was spotted in the water close to the Scotswood Bridge .

An 18-year-old driver and his 17-year-old passenger were quickly located after they had managed to escape from the car.

The two teenagers have been helping investigating officers with their inquiries.

The circumstances surrounding how the car went into the river remain a mystery and officers have appealed for potential witnesses to get in touch.

The car was recovered on Monday evening with the help of the fire service.

It is now believed to be in Northumbria Police's recovery unit where officers will examine it for further clues.

Neither of the men were injured in the incident, and no-one else was in the vehicle at the time it went into the water.

Witness Matthew McCullough captured the dramatic moment the Renault Clio was located beneath the surface of the River Tyne.

Footage shows the roof of the vehicle poking out of the water near a jetty.

A man who works locally first became aware of the incident when a frantic customer asked him to dial 999.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said both teenagers ended up in the water, but indicated neither would require hospital treatment.

Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101, quoting reference number 807 12/08/19.
