Some commenters pointed out that this is not the first time a similar incident has taken place, with one man writing:

This wasn't the first time it happened (Ian Stevens/Edinburgh Live)

"Way back in the early 1980’s I dealt with a similar ‘accident’. No injuries sustained in this one apart from a bruised ego. Young lad showing off to his girlfriend in the early hours of the morning and misjudged where the pier end was due to the heavy fog!"

Another person added: "Every year without fail."

And another bystander said: "I saw this! Literally stopped in my tracks when I saw it... How the actual hell!!!!!? Did they not see the edge!?"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At around 5.30pm on Monday 31 August 2020, police were called to a report of a car having fallen into Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh.

"Emergency services attended and a 58 year old woman was arrested in connection with the incident.

"Enquiries are continuing."
