Car ploughs into several pedestrians outside Manchester hospital resulting in 'life-threatening' injuries

Two people have suffered "life-threatening" injuries after a car ploughed into several pedestrians outside of a hospital in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police said they were called to a "serious collision" outside of Withington Hospital after 2pm.

"Two women have been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries", a spokesperson said.

"The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 80s, remained at the scene and is speaking with police."

Police initially said a man and a woman were taken to hospital but said they were later informed they were both women.

North West Ambulance Service said an ambulance was called to the hospital around 2.05pm.

A spokeswoman said one casualty was taken to Wythenshawe hospital and one to Manchester Royal Infirmary, both with serious injuries.

She said there were no reports of any other casualties.

Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News the car, reportedly a Ford Focus, also smashed into barriers and lamp posts in the hospital's car park.

"Two people were on the ground receiving CPR," the witness said.

"There were at least 20 police cars and lots of ambulances."

The latest pictures from the scene showed police officers examining a green Ford Focus in the hospital car park.
