Car piled so high with rubbish driver crashed because they couldn’t find the handbrake

A driver who crashed their car because it was too messy has been shamed by police officers on social media.

Police were called to the scene of a collision after a motorist tried to use their handbrake but couldn't find it under the clutter so rolled back hitting the car behind.

When they investigated, officers saw the driver had not been able to grab the handbrake because the vehicle was so crammed with rubbish.

The force officers decided to post pictures of the offending car on social media to warn of the dangers this kind of untidiness can cause.

Hampshire Police said: “Boris Johnson's car is a dream compared to this one! Driver couldn't get the hand brake on and rolled back into a parked vehicle. I wonder why?”

The comment was referring to the recent revelations about the interior of the former Foreign Secretary’s car which is said to have been strewn with coffee cups, discarded clothes and books.

The car pictures is jammed full of rubbish which is piled high on the seats, over the handbrake and event in the footwells.

It included bags stuffed with newspapers and food wrappers, a plant, a footstool and even an electric desk fan in case of hot weather emergencies.

Police say they hoped by making these images public, other drivers will stop and think about how allowing a car to get into such a mess could actually result in a serious collision.

Besides, it’s not just an accident that you risk if you keep your car in a filthy state, you could be fined or even invalidate your car insurance cover.

If officers deem your car too messy for you to be able to control it safely, you could be slapped with a £60 fine for its “dangerous condition.”

Similarly, if you’re involved in a collision and it’s adjudged the state of your car rendered you unable to control it safely, you could invalidate your insurance policy.
