Car part smashes through windscreen leaving driver seriously injured on A90

A woman has been seriously injured after car part hurtled through the windscreen and hurt her on one of Scotland's busiest roads.

The 47-year-old was rushed to Ninewells hospital after the crash on the A90 near Brechin at around 10.50am yesterday morning.

A major rescue effort was launched with an air ambulance scrambled to the scene with huge tailbacks forming.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a large 'hole' in the windscreen of the vehicle.

Now police have launched a probe, saying a suspension leaf spring, commonly used in car wheels, went through the windscreen of the woman's silver Volkswagen Amarok hitting her.

A police spokesman said: "The incident happened on the A90 southbound near the B966 junction around 10.50am on Sunday, when a suspension leaf spring came through the windscreen of a silver VW Amarok, striking the 47-year-old female passenger.

"The woman was conveyed by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital with serious injuries."

Following the accident, the A90 southbound was closed for an hour as police investigated and re-opened at 12.25pm.

Constable Derek Miller, of Dundee Road Policing Unit, said: “The woman sustained serious injuries as a result of this incident.

"I am appealing for anyone who may have been driving in the area or may have dashcam footage that could assist with our investigation to contact police.”

"Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident 1512 of August 2."

Eyewitnesses said on social media they had seen a "huge hole in the windscreen" of the 4X4 and only one vehicle appeared to have been involved.

The air ambulance is understood to have landed in a field close to the scene and taken a woman to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.
