Car parks closed in Torfaen after visitors break coronavirus rules

Car parks were forced to close across Torfaen after an influx of visitors broke Covid-19 rules.

In an announcement on Monday, Torfaen Council said they closed "a number" of car parks on the weekend "due to people breaking Covid-19 regulations".

The local authority said visitors had travelled from outside the borough and did not have a reasonable excuse for visiting.

A council spokesperson said the car parks would reopen so residents with genuine reasons can visit local parks, paths and beauty spots.

On reopening, car parks will be monitored and closure will remain a "last resort", the council said.

"Following discussion with Gwent Police we shut a number of car parks on the weekend due to people breaking Covid-19 regulations," a Tweet posted by Torfaen Council read.

"A number of visitors had travelled from outside the borough and did not have a reasonable excuse for visiting.

"We appreciate shutting car parks is unfair for people with specific health or mobility issues that may need to travel from their home to be able to exercise.

"Fresh air and exercise is good for the physical and mental health of children and adults, but exercise or having a walk should start and finish from home and residents shouldn’t drive anywhere or meet anyone from outside their household for exercise.

"The car parks will reopen so residents with genuine reasons can visit these destinations, but they will be monitored and closure will remain a last resort when the number of visitors are considered a public health risk.

"Please be considerate to others and help keep Torfaen safe.
