Car parked on pavement blocks hydrant needed to put "very large fire" out

People in Bristol have been reminded to park considerately after a hydrant needed to put a fire out was blocked by a car.

Bedminster Fire Station attended an incident in Knowle West early this morning (May 31) and found the nearest hydrant to the scene was covered by a vehicle parked on the pavement.

The south Bristol station shared a reminder on its Twitter page after the blaze, which it said affected "around five properties".

The tweet reads: "Please do not park on pavements and block hydrants.

"We really needed this one due to a very large fire affecting around five properties this morning in Knowle West.

"We only have a limited amount of water on board, so we need to connect to the nearest hydrant quickly."

A spokesperson for Bedminster Fire Station told Bristol Live there were no casualties in the fire.

To douse the flames firefighters had to request an additional appliance, before connecting it to the next nearest hydrant which was located more than 100 metres away.

They did not want to reveal the exact location of the hydrant that was blocked.
