Car mounts pavement and crashes into pedestrians in 'deliberate' Christmas Eve attack

Police are appealing for help after a car "deliberately" crashed into pedestrians in a Lancashire town on Christmas Eve.

Rossendale Police say the collision happened in Rawtenstall, around 10 miles north of Bury, at 11.30pm.

A man and woman were walking in Bacup Road when a blue Volkswagen Golf mounted the pavement, crashed into them and drove off.

In a statement on Facebook, a police spokesman said: "Earlier in the evening the couple had been verbally assaulted at a nearby pub and it is believed this incident is linked to the first one, and is possibly racially-motivated.

"Luckily neither the man nor the woman were seriously injured."

DC Melissa Chadwick, of Burnley CID, said she is appealing to anyone who may have been a witness or driving through the area at the time to get in touch.

"We are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has dashcam footage of it, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who thinks they know who may have been driving the car.

"Thankfully the couple weren't seriously injured but clearly this incident could have been a lot more serious and we need to find those responsible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Burnley CID on 01282 472518 quoting incident number 1500 of December 24th.
