Car mounted pavement and crushed Bristol family causing double skull fracture and a punctured lung

A family have spoken out about the moment they were seriously injured by a car that had mounted a pavement.

The incident happened when Janice Kent, her brother Geoff and his wife Lesley were walking in Henleaze in January.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary told the BBC a car driven by a woman in her 80s was reversing near the Co-op shop in Cardigan Road when it mounted the pavement.

Mr Kent said his wife was "thrown up in the air" as he and his sister were crushed between a wall and clothing bin, the BBC reports.

His pelvis and ribs were fractured, while his sister suffered a double skull fracture, a broken neck and a punctured lung.

Janice Kent said she was left "very, very traumatised".

Police talked to the driver about the possibility of giving up her licence but they have said this is a matter for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

"Yes I do feel lucky to be alive but she's done all this damage and she's still carrying on," Janice Kent said.

A DVLA spokesman told the BBC all drivers had a legal responsibility to "meet the medical standards to drive".

He added that drivers must tell the DVLA about any conditions which could affect their ability to drive.

"If a relevant medical condition is declared, we will carry out a medical investigation and if a driver does not meet the appropriate medical standards, we can immediately remove their entitlement to drive," he said.
