Car left with no roof and driver taken to hospital after M53 crash

A driver was taken to hospital after crashing whilst travelling on the M53 last night.

A shocking picture, showing the badly mangled Renault Clio with its roof cut off, was released by officers after the crash on the Wirral stretch of the motorway.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 7pm on Sunday after the car careered off the motorway southbound between Junction 4 Bebington/Clatterbridge and Junction 5 Eastham.

Despite her car being severely damaged and hitting a number of trees, police said the woman driving only suffered "minor injuries."

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 7pm on Sunday 21 March police were informed of a one-car collision on the M53 southbound, between junctions 4 and 5.

" Officers attended and discovered that a Renault Clio had left the carriageway and collided with trees."

The spokesperson added: "The driver was assessed by paramedics at the scene before she was taken to Aintree University Hospital in an ambulance. The Clio was recovered."

And tweeting out the picture Cheshire Specials said: "Amazingly the driver escaped with only minor injuries. "
