Seven people were knocked over by a car that drove in the wrong direction for about 130 meters along the iconic Takeshita Street in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, early Tuesday, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The MPD arrested a 21-year-old man who was driving the car on suspicion of attempted murder. The man told the police he had knocked down the pedestrians in order to kill them, the MPD said.

According to the announcement by the MPD, he ran into eight pedestrians -- all male -- with four of them seriously injured. Among them was a student in his teens who was unconscious and in critical condition.

The incident occurred on the busy street near JR Harajuku Station and Meiji Jingu shrine. Takeshita Street is crowded with boutiques and restaurants that are popular with young people. The area had been prohibited for cars, as many visitors had been expected at Meiji Jingu to pray for the New Year.
