Carjackers dragged schoolgirl from motor by the hair as she waited for mum outside shop

A schoolgirl was dragged by the hair from her mum's car as she waited outside a shop.

The 15-year-old was in the passenger seat when vicious Gary Thomson and Sarah Blakeway pounced in a terrifying broad daylight carjacking.

The pair were brought to justice at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday after admitting assault and robbery in November.

The court heard the car was parked outside a shop in Coatbridge Road, Glenmavis on the quiet Sunday morning.

Blakeaway, 31, pulled open the passenger door grabbed the young girl by the hair and dragged her onto the street.

Meanwhile, Thomson, 32, jumped into the driver's seat and the pair drove off in the dark grey VW Touran.

The victim was left distressed, but fortunately unharmed.

The motor was later found abandoned in a nearby car park and Thomson and Blakeaway traced a few days later.

Thomson was sentenced to 32 months behind bars yesterday and disqualified from driving for seven years.

Blakeway was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and tagged for nine months under a Restriction of Liberty Order.

The pair had pled guilty to a charge of assault and robbery on 3 March at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

Les Brown, Procurator Fiscal for South Strathclyde, said: “This type of offending, involving as it does an unprovoked attack on a child and the theft of a vehicle in a small village on a quiet Sunday morning, is extremely rare in this area.

“As such, I welcome the conviction and sentence and the message it sends. We will not tolerate this type of behaviour.

“I wish to thank everyone involved with the case and in particular the police officers who obtained the key evidence that allowed our prosecutors to secure this conviction.”
