The Roads Policing Unit at Mersey Police Traffic today praised the work of colleagues at the North West Motorway Police Group as two arrests were made for suspected theft, and a car seized in the early hours.
Officers later tweeted: "Our motorway patrols used pre-emptive tactics to stop a vehicle which had been used in a spree of thefts across the country.
"The FSP (passenger) tried his luck on foot but was detained after a short chase.
"Both occupants were arrested for theft and the vehicle was seized by North West Motorway Police (NWMP)."
The motorway police group provides a regionalised policing service for the motorways within the Cheshire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester Police areas. It was established in June 2008 in partnership with the Highways Agency.
Operating from bases across the three police areas, NWMP is made up of more than 130 police officers and more than 30 support staff from the three forces.
The group is responsible for patrolling a motorway network stretching from the borders with Lancashire in the north to West Mercia and Staffordshire to the south, as well as North Wales to the west and West Yorkshire to the east.
