Two killed when freight train hits car north of Adelaide

The crash at Mallala happened just after 3:00pm.

Two people have died in a crash between a train and a car at a level crossing at Mallala, north of Adelaide, police say.

The crash happened shortly after 3:00pm, just south of the town, about 60 kilometres north of Adelaide.

Two people died at the scene when the Ford four-wheel drive they were in was hit by the train.

Police said the 73-year-old man driving the vehicle and a 66-year-old woman — both from Mallala — were pronounced dead at the scene.

The level crossing had no boom gates.

Police said the two train drivers hit the emergency brakes upon impact, but the train took nearly its full 1,800-metre length to come to a standstill.

Chief Inspector Shane Addison said it was not yet known how fast the train was travelling.

"That is all currently part of the investigation," he said.

"I am aware that the train carries a video tape and has a data recorder, and all of that information is in the process of being collected as part of the investigation."

The Australian Rail Track Corporation said it was a Pacific National freight train heading from Perth to Melbourne.

A Pacific National spokeswoman said one of the company's freight trains was involved in a fatal incident at a level crossing near Two Wells.

"Emergency services are on the scene and the incident will be subject to investigation," she said.

Major Crash investigators also attended the scene and are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police closed the main Mallala to Two Wells road to all traffic, but said there were no road or rail restrictions currently in place.

Driver thrown from car dies in hospital

Meanwhile, a driver has died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital after his vehicle hit a tree at Highbury, in Adelaide's north-east.

The 21-year-old Banksia Park was thrown from the car unconscious.

Lower North East Road has reopened after previously being closed in both directions near its intersection with Paradise Grove.

And a cyclist who was hit by a car near Strathalbyn on Tuesday has died.

The crash happened about 6:30am on Nine Mile Road, in Willyaroo.

The 44-year-old Strathalbyn woman was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre but died on Thursday morning.

The three deaths bring the total lives lost on South Australia's roads to 19 this year, compared with 17 at the same time last year.
