Car gets submerged by water at Holy Island crossing in Northumberland

A coastal rescue team was called to Holy Island after a car was cut off by the tide.

The incident took place at the popular Northumberland tourist spot on Sunday afternoon when the vehicle became submerged in the water.

Crews from HM Coastguard Holy Island arrived in the area and helped to bring the driver to safety.

In a Facebook message, they said: "The team responded to a vehicle cut off by the tide this afternoon.

"All person were assisted to safety by our coastguard Officers. Tea and biscuits were provided."

They emphasised that anyone in trouble should call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred at Holy Island.

The emergency services have received numerous reports of vehicles stranded in the area over the years.

They continue to warn people to check tide times before crossing the causeway. This is our guide on how to cross without getting trapped.
