Car fires at Charlestown believed to be linked, police say

Police investigating two car fires at Charlestown on Wednesday believe the incidents are linked.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews and police were called to a home at Whitburn Close on Wednesday evening where a Hyundai i30 was alight.

While officers were at the address, police received another report of a vehicle fire - this time at Merran Avenue, less than 2km away from the initial blaze.

There, a man found his Subaru Forester alight but he was able to extinguish the fire.

Police said the man then noticed two separate small fires at the side of his home and he put each of them out.

Lake Macquarie police are investigating the fires, which are believed to be linked.

Chief Inspector David Matthews said the incidents were timely reminders for residents to revisit home security.

"Always try to park vehicles inside a garage where possible, never leave valuables inside your car and in plain sight, and always remember to lock the door before walking away," he said.

"These may seem like simple reminders but they can help you avoid becoming a victim of crime."

Police are appealing for anyone who may have CCTV footage or dash cam footage from the area, between 5.30pm and 8pm on Wednesday, to contact Belmont police station on 4922 8899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
