Car fire on M8 sees police shut down motorway near Harthill Services

A section of the M8 motorway has been shut down in response to a car fire.

An eastbound section of the road has been closed between junctions 5 and 6 following the incident.

It is unknown if anyone has been injured at this stage and Glasgow Live have contacted Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for comment.

Traffic Scotland first advised of the incident shortly after 4pm.

Their latest update, at 4.15pm, states: "M8 CLOSED E/B between J5-6 due to a vehicle fire.

"Emergency services are in attendance."

Photos circulated on social media appear to show flames coming from the vehicle and smoke billowing across the motorway.

Motorists have already reported significant delays.

UPDATE: A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed to Glasgow Live: "We did attend to the M8 eastbound today. We received a call at 15.43 reporting a car on fire in the eastbound direction. Two appliances attended and extinguished the fire and we’re now away from the scene."

Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 3.45pm on Friday, 3 December, to a report of a car on fire on hard shoulder of the M8 at Harthill near junction 5, eastbound. Two lanes were closed while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended. The road re-opened fully around 4.25pm.”

It's also been confirmed thankfully no injuries were sustained.
