Car fire on M5 causes miles and miles of tailbacks

A car fire on the M5, in an incident which involved other vehicles, caused miles of tailbacks on the last Sunday of the school summer holidays.

A video, sent in to Bristol Live, shows the front half of a car has been severely damaged by flames.

Further pictures show queues of motorists on the southbound carriageway after the incident which happened near J21, Weston-super-Mare.

Vehicles are completely stationary with some drivers and passengers seen out of their cars on the busy motorway.

The incident occurred this afternoon (September 1), and the lanes of the motorway did not open until around 5pm, after the incident was cleared from the carriageway around 4:30pm.

It was a bad day on the M5, as holiday traffic was having a big impact on the number of people travelling.
