Bus fire causes huge tailbacks on Edinburgh City bypass as emergency services close road

Drivers are facing hours of tailback on the Edinburgh City Bypass following a vehicle fire.

Police and fire crews rushed to the scene this morning following reports of the blaze.

The A720 road eastbound between Lasswade and Gilmerton has been closed following the incident with drivers encouraged to plan alternative routes.

At 7am this morning traffic was already tailing back to Lothianburn.

At 8.45am an update said traffic is being diverted off at the Straiton junction, however, surrounding roads are also extremely busy.

Long queues of rush hour traffic can be seen from CCTV footage.

The road was initially closed at 6.40am this morning.

Traffic Scotland is keeping people updated on social media.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Our officers were called to assist with traffic around 6.20am due to vehicle fire on the eastbound carriageway near Straiton.

"Officers still at the scene while the bus is being recovered."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 6.14am on Thursday, August 13 to reports of a bus on fire at the Edinburgh City Bypass Eastbound near to the Lasswade junction.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene where firefighters extinguished the flames.

“No injuries were reported and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
