Car explodes in Allentown, Pa., killing at least 1; federal agents join investigation

ALLENTOWN, Pa. A car exploded in Allentown's center city Saturday night, killing at least one person, Allentown police said.

The FBI said Sunday afternoon that it believes the explosion site posed no further threat.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim could not confirm the number of fatalities, and said he did not expect to release information anytime soon. Early Sunday morning, police reported "multiple" fatalities, but in a news release issued later said "at least one" person was dead.

The FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the explosion site Sunday.

At the scene, an Allentown police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity said he expected investigators would need several days to process evidence from the main explosion site.

Norlian Soto was at the Family Dollar store when she heard a loud explosion.

"What happened?" she said she thought. The explosion was so strong, she thought it was a house that exploded. She hurried home, where her three children, ages 15, 12, and 10, awaited her.

She and her husband took the children and went to a friend's house for the night.

"I didn't want to stay in the area," she said.
