Car expert praises bathroom staple for de-fogging windscreens in a flash

Getting into your car on a cold winter morning is really stressful - it seems like no matter what you try, nothing can speed up the process of clearing your car windscreen, so you just have to sit and wait it out. If you don't fancy getting up half an hour earlier however, there may be something in your bathroom that can help you get on the road quicker.

Experts at leasing company Vehicle Contracts have urged drivers to use shaving cream inside their windows to clear up any residual fog and ice, and warn that driving without a clear windscreen can land you with a fine.

The experts claim that shaving cream is 'made with many of the same ingredients as de-foggers', so anyone with a bottle in their bathroom cabinet won't need to buy anything else, the Express reports.

They also said that it will prevent the windscreen from fogging up again on your journey, which will stop you from having to wind your windows down in these freezing temperatures.

Drivers have been warned that they can be fined £60 and given three points on their licence for failing to clear their windscreen properly - so it's well worth giving this trick a go.

Experts at Vehicle Contracts also suggested using socks on windscreen wipers the night before a big freeze, as this could 'stop snow and ice from collecting there'. This will prevent wipers sticking to your windscreen and having to prize them off in the morning.

They also recommended doing the same for your mirrors with plastic bags as they'll be clear when removed.

The AA also told the Express that drivers should never begin their journey without ensuring their windscreen is completely clear, as it can create a hazard.

Ben Sheridan, AA Patrol of the Year said: "Driving safely means making sure that your line of vision is kept clear.

"If your vision's obscured, you might not be able to see the road ahead properly and it could even create a blind spot. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe condensation off windows without leaving smears."
