Car engulfed in flames on M4 near Newport

A car has caught fire on the side of the motorway on the outskirts of Newport.

Traffic Wales captured the moment the vehicle was engulfed in flames on the M4 at Malpas on Sunday morning.

Roads are quiet on account of it being a Sunday morning and the last day of the fire-break lockdown in Wales, meaning only essential travel is permitted, and traffic looks to be largely unaffected.

Emergency services made their way to the stricken car, on the eastbound carriageway between junction 27, High Cross, and junction 26, Malpas.

Gwent Police have been contacted for comment, as has the Welsh Ambulance Service. It's not known if anyone has been been hurt in the fire or how the car came to be on fire.

The vehicle is pulled over on the hard shoulder within the section of motorway where the average speed limits apply.

Traffic appears to be coping well, according to traffic monitoring firm Inrix.
