Car engulfed in flames in huge blaze after 'exploding' in Manchester street

A car went up in flames and 'exploded' in Chorlton.

Dramatic video footage shows the vehicle engulfed in flames after catching fire on Claridge Road shortly before 1am on Thursday morning.

Firefighters spent around an hour putting the fire out.

Imogen Willcocks, who lives nearby, said she was woken by a loud bang.

She said: "I thought there had been an explosion. That was what it sounded like.

"I looked out of my window and then I saw this car engulfed by flames. It was a big fire.

"Firefighters and police vehicles were there for quite a while."

It's not clear how the car caught fire, or whether anyone was hurt.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 1.10am on Thursday, 12 th August, firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Claridge Road, in Manchester.

"One fire engine from Moss Side quickly attended the scene. The fire involved a car on the roadway.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and a thermal imagining camera to extinguish the fire.

"Fire crews were in attendance for around one hour."

The Manchester Evening News has contacted Greater Manchester Police for a response.
